Dr. Mícheál Macken has spent more than two decades treating complex epilepsy as an epileptologist, clinical neurophysiologist, and Associate Professor of Neurology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He is board certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Epilepsy, and has served as an attending neurologist in Northwestern Medicine’s Division of Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology since 2008.
Dr. Macken’s medical training began in Ireland, where he earned his medical degree and completed postgraduate training in internal medicine and neurology. He then trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, one of the country’s leading epilepsy centers, completing his neurology residency and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy, where he was chosen to lead as Chief Resident and later Chief Fellow. A visiting fellowship in electrophysiology at King’s College Hospital in London rounded out his training.
His clinical expertise spans the management of medically refractory epilepsy, epilepsy surgery evaluation, status epilepticus, and complex neuromodulation therapies including vagus nerve stimulation. He has extensive experience in intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, with more than 5,000 cases to date, and in advanced EEG techniques including stereo-EEG and invasive brain mapping for epilepsy surgery.
Dr. Macken has served as an investigator on numerous clinical trials in epilepsy and neuromodulation and has authored or co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations throughout his career.
Dr. Macken is also recognized as one of Northwestern’s top medical educators, training the next generation of neurologists and epileptologists. For this work, he has received Northwestern’s Nicholas Vick Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching three times, multiple Outstanding Teacher Awards, and the American Academy of Neurology’s A.B. Baker Teaching Award.
